January 2019 Dynamic Update Developer’s Notes: Cornucopia CID

Below are changes that came out of the Cornucopia CID. Our thanks to all who participated in this CID cycle!

Khador

Vladimir Tzepesci, Great Prince of Umbrey

Replace the text of Blood-Quenched with the following:

Blood-Quenched - This model gains a cumulative +1 STR and ARM for each enemy model it destroys with a melee attack during its activation. This bonus lasts for one round.

We removed the “living” requirement from Blood-Quenched to make it universally applicable. This is a quality-of-life improvement to help Vlad (and Fenris, below) get more out of their aggressive gameplay.

Doom Reavers

Cost 10.

But what if Doom Reavers were 10 points? This cost reduction, along with a couple of other changes to the Greylord Escort (below), makes Doom Reavers a more compelling choice.

Greylord Escort

Gain Combat Caster:

Combat Caster - When this model’s unit receives the Press Forward order, before its Normal Movement, this model can make one Magic Ability special action or special attack. This model can then run or charge normally.

Cut Granted: Rise.

Gain Death Strider (★Action):

Death Strider (Action) - Models in this unit gain Relentless Charge. (While advancing as part of a charge, a model with Relentless Charge gains Pathfinder .)

Gain Fell Curse (★Action):

Fell Curse (Action) - While within 5˝ of this model, enemy models lose Tough and cannot have damage removed from them. Fell Curse lasts for one round.

Gain Sacrificial Pawn [Doom Reaver]:

Sacrificial Pawn [Doom Reaver] - When this model is directly hit by an enemy ranged attack, you can have one friendly, non-incorporeal Doom Reaver model within 3˝ of it directly hit instead. That model is automatically hit and suffers all damage and effects.

These changes are designed to reinforce the idea of Doom Reavers as a straightforward, aggressive, enemy-mulching unit. Granted: Rise was cut in favor of doubling down on aggressive, push-forward abilities like Relentless Charge, removing Tough, and giving the Escort himself some anti-ranged defenses.

Greylord Outriders

Cost 10/17.

This is a simple cost reduction to Greylord Outriders.

Greylord Ternion

Change the text of Blizzard (★Action) to the following:

Blizzard (Action) - Choose a friendly Faction model within 5˝ of this model. Center a 3˝ AOE cloud effect on the chosen model. The AOE remains centered on the model for one round. If the chosen model is destroyed or removed from play, remove the AOE from play.

Add Bonds of Woe (★Attack):

Bonds of Woe (Attack) - Bonds of Woe is a RNG 10, POW 12 magic attack. When a living enemy warrior model is boxed by Bonds of Woe, remove it from play. You can then return one destroyed Grunt to a friendly Doom Reaver Swordsmen unit in this model’s command range. Place the Grunt in formation and completely within 3˝ of this model. The Grunt must forfeit its Combat Action the turn it is put into play.

Tip: The boxed model does not provide a soul or corpse token.

Cut Frostbite (★Attack).

The change to Blizzard means you can now place the cloud on friendly Doom Reaver models. Due to their Spell Ward, you previously could not target them to put the clouds on them. Blizzard has now changed to a “choose,” which allows you to put clouds on your Doom Reavers.

Bonds of Woe replaces Frostbite, exchanging a spray for a single, longer-range attack. Additionally, Bonds of Woe adds a recursion mechanic to your force, giving you the ability to replenish your Doom Reavers.

Fenris (Both Forms)

Cost 8.

CMD 10.

Mounted version loses Tough .

Gain Blood-Quenched:

Blood-Quenched - This model gains a cumulative +1 STR and ARM for each enemy model it destroys with a melee attack during its activation. This bonus lasts for one round.

Change Leadership [Doom Reaver] to:

Leadership [Doom Reavers] - While in this model’s command range, friendly Doom Reaver models gain Rise.

Gain Rise:

Rise - If this model is knocked down at the beginning of your Maintenance Phase, it stands up.

Fell Blades gain Grievous Wounds:

Grievous Wounds - A model hit by this weapon loses Tough and cannot have damage removed from it for one round.

Here is a laundry list of changes to Fenris. His cost and CMD were adjusted, and his mounted version lost Tough because, well, let’s be fair, that’s weird and unintuitive.

As mentioned above with Vlad, Blood-Quenched received some quality-of-life adjustments to be less discriminate in the types of carnage being wreaked.

Additionally, we moved the Granted: Rise from the Greylord Escort into a Leadership for Doom Reavers that provides Rise on Fenris. Lastly, his weapons were given Grievous Wounds. The goal was to turn Fenris into a centerpiece model that supports your army as you cross the table and then presses forward into the enemy ranks to really demolish them.

Koldun Lord

Gain Lore Master [Greylord].

Lore Master [Greylord] - This model can cast the Magic Ability spells of any Greylord models in its command range as if they were its own.

Cut Frostbite (★Attack) and Ice Cage (★Attack).

Gain Brittle Frost (Attack):

Brittle Frost (Attack) - Brittle Frost is a RNG 10 magic attack. A model hit by this attack suffers a POW 10 cold damage roll  and suffers –2 ARM for one turn unless it has Immunity: Cold .

Gain Puppet Master (Action or Attack):

Puppet Master (Action or Attack) - Puppet Master is a RNG 10 spell. When it targets an enemy model/unit, it is a magic attack. You can have one affected model reroll one attack or damage roll, then Puppet Master expires. Puppet Master lasts for one round.

The Koldun Lord was re-imagined into a versatile support solo that is as potent as you want to make him. His new Lore Master ability allows him to utilize the spells of your Greylords, giving him an extremely diverse selection of abilities to choose from, based on your army composition.

We removed some of his cold-based, offensive spells in favor of focusing on the backline support options, including an ARM debuff and Puppet Master.

Mercenaries

Captain Bartolo Montador

Replace the text of Blood-Quenched with the following:

Blood-Quenched - This model gains a cumulative +1 STR and ARM for each enemy model it destroys with a melee attack during its activation. This bonus lasts for one round.

Good ol’ Captain Bart is a “victim” of the Blood-Quenched change. This simply makes the ability a little easier to use and to take advantage of, as it no longer requires living enemies.

Skorne

Archdomina Makeda

Replace the text of Blood-Quenched with the following:

Blood-Quenched - This model gains a cumulative +1 STR and ARM for each enemy model it destroys with a melee attack during its activation. This bonus lasts for one round.

As mentioned above, Makeda also benefits from the change to Blood-Quenched. It no longer requires you to kill living enemy models; now you can kill any kind of enemy model to quench that blood!

Legion

Succubus

Change the text of Blizzard (★Action) to the following:

Blizzard (Action) - Choose a friendly Faction model within 5˝ of this model. Center a 3˝ AOE cloud effect on the chosen model. The AOE remains centered on the model for one round. If the chosen model is destroyed or removed from play, remove the AOE from play.

We changed Blizzard from a target to a “choose” to allow the ability to target friendly Faction models, even if they have some form of spell protection. This is a simple quality-of-life change.

Theme Forces

Protectorate Theme Force: The Faithful Masses

Change the second benefit to the following:

For every full 20 points of Paladin solos, Reclaimer solos, and Protectorate units in this army, you can add one Protectorate weapon crew unit, Initiates of the Order of the Wall unit, Protectorate command attachment, or small- or medium-based Protectorate solo to the army free of cost. Free models do not count toward the total point value of units in the army when calculating this bonus.

We added the Initiates of the Order of the Wall as a free option in Faithful Masses. Nothing more to say here.  Enjoy!

Khador Theme Force: Armored Korps

Add “Greylord Adjunct” to the Army Composition section.

Khador Theme Force: Jaws of the Wolf

Add “Greylord Adjunct” to the Army Composition section.

Khador Theme Force: Legion of Steel

Add “Greylord Adjunct” to the Army Composition section.

Khador Theme Force: Winter Guard Kommand

Add “Greylord Adjunct” to the Army Composition section.

We have added the Greylord Adjunct to all of the above Khador themes. Reminder: because he is a Greylord model, he is automatically included in the Wolves of Winter theme!

Khador Theme Force: Wolves of Winter

Add “Ruin” to the Army Composition section.

Change the second benefit to the following:

For every full 20 points of Greylord and Doom Reaver models/units in this army, you can add one Greylord Ternion unit, Khador command attachment, or small- or medium-based Khador solo to the army free of cost. Free models do not count toward the total point value of Greylord or Doom Reaver models/units in the army when calculating this bonus.

And finally, a couple of quick changes to Wolves of Winter now allows you to take Ruin in the theme, even without it being controlled by the Butcher. Lastly, you can also take a free unit of Greylord Ternion as an option in army construction.
