October 2017 Dynamic Update Developer's Notes

Here are all the changes from the Northkin CID cycle. Enjoy!

Trollbloods

Borka Kegslayer

Add the Relentless Charge special rule to Borka:

Relentless ChargeWhile advancing as part of a charge, this model gains Pathfinder .

Add the following to the beginning of the Mosh Pit spell:

Knocked down friendly Faction models in the spellcaster’s control range immediately stand up. Models that became knocked down this turn are not affected by Mosh Pit.

Borka1 has always been a solid Trollblood warlock, but we feel these two changes can really make him shine as a leader of the Northkin.

Keg Carrier

Increase the SPD to 6.

The Keg Carrier was constantly being left behind a rapidly advancing Borka1. This change should help the little fella keep up with his boss on a turn-by-turn basis.

Borka, Vengeance of the Rimeshaws

Reduce the warbeast points to +27.

Replace the Critical Knockdown special rule on the Mount with Knockdown:

KnockdownWhen a model is hit by an attack with this weapon, it becomes knocked down.

Add the Attuned Spirit [Northkin] and Defiant Rage special rules to Borka:

Attuned Spirit [Northkin]Once per activation, this model can cast the animus of a Northkin warbeast in its battlegroup without spending fury.

Defiant RageWhen this model is damaged by an enemy attack, after the attack is resolved this model gains +2 STR and ARM for one round.

Replace the Field Marshal [Immunity: Cold] special rule with Field Marshal [Northkin]:

Field Marshal [Northkin]Warbeasts in this model’s battlegroup are Northkin models and gain Immunity: Cold .

Replace the stats and text of the Snow Shroud spell with the following:

Snow Shroud | 2 | Self | – | – | Rnd | No
Friendly Faction models gain concealment while in the spellcaster’s control range. Snow Shroud lasts for one round.

Undergoing a rather massive update, Borka2 has had new life breathed into him. We hope that, with the rest of this dynamic update and the new Northkin models on the horizon, Borka2 will see more consistent play. I will let the changes speak for themselves.

Grim Angus

Replace the second sentence of Grim’s feat Spread the Net with following:

Enemy models beginning their activations in Grim’s control range suffer –3 SPD and cannot charge or make power attacks or special attacks.

Increasing the power of Grim1’s feat was something we saw very consistently in the feedback from the community. We felt this change was merited, and while it’s a simple change, it has a very large impact on gameplay.

Madrak Ironhide, Thornwood Chieftain

Replace Madrak’s feat Crusher with Grim Determination:

Feat: Grim Determination

The greatest chieftain ever to rise to dominance from the Thornwood Forest, Madrak Ironhide inspires his kin and the trolls he commands to tremendous feats of resilience. Together they stand resolute and unmoveable against all who would oppose kith and kriel.

Remove d3 + 3 damage points from friendly Faction models currently in Madrak’s control range. While in Madrak’s control range, friendly Faction models cannot be charged or slam power attacked. Grim Determination lasts for one round.

Add the Tactician [Faction warrior] special rule to Madrak:

Tactician [Faction warrior]While in this model’s command range, friendly Faction warrior models can ignore other friendly Faction warrior models when determining LOS. Friendly Faction warrior models can advance through other friendly Faction warrior models in this model’s command range if they have enough movement to move completely past them.

Replace the text of the Guided Hand spell with the following:

Target friendly Faction model/unit gains an additional die on each model’s next melee attack roll this turn.

Remove the Stone Fall and Sure Foot spells.

Add the Even Ground and Jackhammer spells :

Even Ground | 3 | Self | Ctrl | – | Rnd | No
While in the spellcaster’s control range, friendly Faction models gain +2 DEF and cannot become knocked down. Even Ground lasts for one round.

Jackhammer| 1 | 6 | – | – | – | No
Target model in the spellcaster’s battlegroup immediately makes one basic melee attack.

A classic warlock, Madrak1 received a new feat, a new signature spell, and some additional rules on his card. Grim Determination brings a control feat to Trollbloods that has the rather unique effect of also healing a substantial amount for every model in his control range. Even Ground is a powerhouse of a spell that will be caster-defining and has great synergy with much of the Trollblood army. Jackhammer will create some very interesting interactions with certain warbeasts, especially when combined with the updated wording on Guided Hand.

Earthborn Dire Troll

Reduce the point cost to 14.

Vying with the Dire Troll Mauler for a spot in lists, the Earthborn Dire Troll felt a tad too expensive. We hope this reduction in points will help carve out its niche.

Pyre Troll

Reduce the point cost to 8.

This solid ranged beast that also supplies a reasonable amount of support felt a little over-priced compared to other options in the Faction. Reducing its cost will increase its efficiency and hopefully get the Pyre Troll into more lists.

Mulg the Ancient

Increase the point cost to 22.

Increase the STR to 13.

Replace the Arcane Suppression animus with Rites of Power:

Rites of Power | 1 | Self | * | – | Turn | No
This model’s controller can channel spells through it. When a spell is channeled through it, this model immediately suffers d3 damage points. Rites of Power lasts for one turn.

Replace the text of the Bond [Doomshaper] special rule with the following:

If this model begins the game in Doomshaper’s battlegroup, it is bonded to him. This model is not considered to be bonded while under your opponent's control. While this model is bonded to Doomshaper, it gains +1 FURY.

Remove the Regeneration [d3] special rule.

Add the Arcane Vortex, Hyper-Regeneration, and Primal Rage special rules to Mulg:

Arcane VortexThis model can immediately negate any spell that targets it or a model within 3˝ of it by spending 1 fury point. The negated spell does not take effect, but its COST remains spent.

Hyper-RegenerationRemove d3 damage points from this model at the start of each of its activations.

Primal RageOnce per turn, when this model suffers damage from an enemy attack at any time except while it is advancing, after the attack is resolved it can immediately make a full advance toward the attacking model and can make one basic melee attack.

Mulg received a lot of attention in this CID cycle, as we felt it was important to differentiate him from Rök. The significant increase in his cost allowed us to up his power level accordingly. With increased Strength comes increased damage output, and a new animus breathes life into this model as a unique fixture in the Faction. With a slew of new rules added to the back of his card, Mulg feels as plenty powerful, and now has Arcane Vortex, a rule unique to the Faction. (Please note that Mulg does indeed SPEND fury points to use Arcane Vortex, rather than being forced to use it.) Replacing Regeneration with Hyper-Regeneration means Mulg won’t ever have to spend a fury to heal during the game, and Primal Rage gives him a more active role during your opponent’s turn, allowing him to move and attack out of activation.

Rök

Change the model type to “Trollblood Northkin Dire Troll Heavy Warbeast.”

Reduce the point cost to 19.

Based on his performance, we felt Rök deserved a slight drop in points. We also felt that making Rök a Northkin model made a lot of sense.

Glacier King

Change the model type to “Trollblood Northkin Gargantuan Warbeast.”

Replace the Thunderbolt special rule with Storm Chiller:

Storm ChillerEnemy models hit can be pushed d3˝ directly away from the attacking model. On a critical hit, the model hit becomes stationary for one round unless it has Immunity: Cold .

Hailing from the frozen wastes of the North, we felt the Glacier King should also be a Northkin model. There was significant feedback showing that Thunderbolt pushing models out of range was a consistent problem for the Glacier King’s many ranged attacks. Storm Chiller makes this push optional and also changes the critical effect from knockdown to stationary.

Sea King

Reduce the point cost to 36.

Increase the RNG of the Vomit Swarm to 10.

Change the AOE of the Vortex of the Deep animus to 4 and replace the text with the following:

On a direct hit, push models within 2˝ of the model directly hit 2˝ directly toward it in the order you choose. This spell’s AOE is shallow water that remains in play for one round.

The CID feedback showed that the Sea King’s point cost was simply too high. The change to Vomit Swarm should increase its consistency, and the adjustments to Vortex of the Deep should make it a more attractive animus.

Winter Troll

Change the model type to “Trollblood Northkin Light Warbeast.”

Increase the RAT to 5.

Add the Pathfinder advantage to the Winter Troll.

Adding the subtype Northkin to the Winter Troll just seemed fitting. Giving it a slight RAT boost will make its spray attack more effective, and native Pathfinder will allow the Winter Troll to navigate parts of the board that other models need to avoid.

Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes

Add the Awaken the Stone (Action) special rule to the Leader:

Awaken the Stone (Action)This model gains d3 fury points.

Adding the Awaken the Stone rule will help some lower-Fury warlocks utilize the Krielstone to its maximum potential.

Trollkin Champions

Increase the STR to 8.

Reduce the point cost for Leader & 4 Grunts to 16.

Add the Sanguine Bond special rule to the Leader & Grunts:

Sanguine BondWhen this model would suffer damage from an enemy attack while in formation, you can choose one or more models in its unit to suffer any amount of that damage instead, divided as you choose. If you do, this model does not suffer that damage. A model cannot suffer more damage as a result of Sanguine Bond than it has unmarked damage boxes.

Increasing their Strength to 8 ups the Champions’ hitting power a small amount. Adding Sanguine Bond to the unit creates interesting tactical choices for the unit while also increasing survivability and allowing for intriguing interactions with other models in the Faction.

Janissa Stonetide

Replace the text of the Raise Earth (Action) special rule with the following:

Place a 4˝ AOE template anywhere completely within the spellcaster’s command range. While models are completely within the AOE, they are elevated 1˝. The AOE remains in play for one round.

A quality-of-life change for Janissa. She can now place her template where she pleases.

Skaldi Bonehammer

Increase the STR to 8.

Add the Sanguine Bond special rule to Skaldi:

Sanguine BondWhen this model would suffer damage from an enemy attack while in formation, you can choose one or more models in its unit to suffer any amount of that damage instead, divided as you choose. If you do, this model does not suffer that damage. A model cannot suffer more damage as a result of Sanguine Bond than it has unmarked damage boxes.

Replace the text of the Tactics: Northkin special rule with the following:

Models in this model’s unit are Northkin models and gain Immunity: Cold .

All of Skaldi’s changes help keep him in line with the unit he attaches to.

Trollkin Long Riders

Increase the ARM to 18.

Increase the RNG of the Cavalry Axe to 2.

Long Riders were not quite pulling their weight for their point cost, but with a bump in armor and melee range we hope to see more of them on the table.

Horthol, Long Rider Hero

Increase the RNG of the Long Hammer to 2.

To keep up with his unit, Horthol received the same increase in melee range that Long Riders did.

Trollkin Runebearer

Increase the point cost to 5.

Add the Arcane Repeater special rule to the Runebearer:

Arcane RepeaterWhile this model’s warlock is within 5˝ of it, that warlock’s control range is extended 2˝.

We saw an opportunity to really help many of the Trollkin warlocks by adding Arcane Repeater to the Trollkin Runebearer. Increasing the control range by 2˝ on casters that with low Fury is a powerful change that will result in a rather significant quality-of-life improvement.

Protectorate of Menoth

The Harbinger of Menoth

Replace the text of the Guided Hand spell with the following:

Target friendly Faction model/unit gains an additional die on each model’s next melee attack roll this turn.

Changing Guided Hand to affect the next melee attack instead of the first melee attack during the turn makes it function in a way that is much more intuitive, especially for models that can attack outside of their activations.

Exemplar Bastions

Replace the first sentence of the Sanguine Bond special rule with the following:

When this model would suffer damage from an enemy attack while in formation, you can choose one or more models in its unit to suffer any amount of that damage instead, divided as you choose.

Sanguine Bond had been a very restrictive rule. Removing the 3˝ limitation on its range should make the positioning of the unit a little more forgiving.
