Iron Sights Preview

No Quarter Prime #3 hails the release of the newest No Quarter Game, Iron Sights! This one-v-one sniper duel is a tabletop experience unlike anything you’ve played before. If you like the idea of playing mind games with your opponent as you maneuver your snipers back and forth on a claustrophobic battlefield, trying to line up the perfect shot to take out the enemy, then you’ll want to check out Iron Sights.

Before we get into specifics about the game, I want to share with you my enthusiasm for these No Quarter Games. Working in development on WARMACHINE & HORDES is a fantastic experience every single day, but like anyone with a penchant for creativity, it’s nice to be able to “stretch your legs” and do something a bit different every now and then. I feel very lucky that I’ve been allowed to let my imagination run wild when creating the various No Quarter Games, and I have manic enthusiasm for each one I’ve created.

Being able to create entire games from scratch that utilize the miniatures from the WARMACHINE & HORDES lines is a treat, and I’m proud to add Iron Sights to the list of other games such as Extreme Colossal Wresting, Deck Raiders, and Engines of Destruction. I hope you have as much fun playing these side-games as I do designing them; it’s always great to get some extra value out of the miniatures you’ve been collecting for years! Plus, if you’re anything like me, games like these give you a good reason to pick up that odd model or two you’ve wanted to paint but that maybe isn’t part of the main army you collect.

Now then, let’s talk about Iron Sights itself. All you need to play is three small-based models, a 30˝ x 30˝ table space, some terrain, dice, a tape measure, and a copy of No Quarter Prime #3. You can use any three models you like, but it’s always fun to pair models with a thematic tie. One model represents your real Sniper, and the other two represent Echoes that obfuscate your Sniper’s position. Which model is which is a secret from your opponent—only you know who your Sniper is until your opponent can figure it out. Think of it as you have an actual sniper plus shadows dancing on walls or a noise in the distance represented by the Echoes.

Before the game begins, you customize your Sniper by adjusting its various attributes, such as how accurate it is with a rifle, how well it can sneak, or how well it can spot the enemy. Then you select a piece of unique gear, such as an arcantrik scope or some soft padded boots, that will help you in your mission.

And that mission is simple: determine which of your opponent’s models is the real Sniper, and put a bullet in its head. Players take turns activating a single model back and forth and can even activate the same model multiple times in a round as long as it doesn’t perform some more complex actions (such as running). When a model activates, it can take actions such as moving, aiming, peeking around corners to spot the enemy, or attempting to distract an opponent.

Each time you take an action, if your opponent’s real Sniper has line-of-sight to the model that completed the action, they can take a free action to peek around a corner and determine if the model is the real Sniper or an Echo. Certain actions are easier to detect, such as running or firing a rifle. Of course, if you do decide to peek, you are giving away that your real Sniper has line-of-sight to the model that performed the action. So, if you’ve only got one model that can see the enemy when it moves, and you decide to make the peek check, you’ve just given away which model is your real Sniper! Try not to peek until you have multiple models with line-of-sight to the enemy model so your opponent can’t be sure who was actually peeking.

It's all about mind games and trying to confuse your opponent. Once a shot is taken, if the model is hit (though there’s a chance to dodge!), it’s removed from play. If it was an Echo, no big deal—it simply fades away. If it was the Sniper, then the player that killed the Sniper immediately wins. Of course, removed Echoes can be returned to play, and the identity of the real Sniper can even be swapped mid-game by Snipers with a particularly strong stealth attribute.
