Insider 11-19-2010

From the moment I glimpsed Cassius the Oathkeeper, I knew I had to build and paint an army with him as my warlock.

The Impossible Dream challenge was the perfect chance for me to realize this goal and to push my army painting skills to the limit. Many of you may have seen my last army come together when I painted Thagrosh’s unstoppable legion for The Gamers’ Journal: Studio Showdown article series in No Quarter 17-21. I knew from the beginning I’d have to paint my Circle army using an altogether different approach since I’d be painting a larger army in a quarter of the time!

Fortunately, I have a plan of attack based on the traditional 2-D under painting technique that should give me the edge I need. Having theoretically solved the time problem, I knew the second obstruction I’d have to overcome would be motivation. For me, painting with others is the best way to stay motivated, learn, and have a fun time. I normally hold a painting night at my home studio once a month, but with the Impossible Dream challenge I’ve stepped it up to once a week! Even this increase in time probably won’t be enough to get everything done. However, I’m hoping once models start getting finished, the momentum will convince me to sit down and paint after getting home from an eight-hour day of painting at the office!

My army list is based around a simple strategy of taking and holding my opponent’s charge using Wold constructs and then breaking my opponent with a Tharn counter charge. The list I came up with is as follows:

Cassius the Oathkeeper & Wurmwood, Tree of Fate +6 pts
Baldur the Stonecleaver +6 pts
Woldwarden -9pts
Wold Guardian x2 -18pts
Woldwatcher -5pts
Megalith -11pts
Woldwyrd -5pts
Shifting Stones -2pts
Stone Keeper -1pts
Tharn Ravagers x5 -9pts
Tharn Ravager Shaman -2pts
Tharn Ravager Chieftain -2pts
Tharn Bloodtrackers x10 -8pts
Nuala the Huntress -2pts
Tharn Ravager White Mane -3pts
Tharn Bloodweavers -5pts
Tharn Wolf Riders x5 -10pts
Druids of Orboros -7pts
Druid Stoneward & Woldstalkers -5pts
Blackclad Wayfarer x2 -4pts
Lord of the Feast -4pts
Total 100 pts

Looking at the list, you can see my army is broken up into three types of models: Tharn, Druids, and Wold constructs. I decided to get things rolling by starting with the Wolds. After a week of work, I’m happy to report I’ve met my goal and finished the constructs as well as Cassius and Wurmwood. Going forward, the plan is to take a week for the druids so I’ll have two weeks to complete my army’s juicy Tharn center.
